Artwork Description
What an odd pose the seller chose to showcase this antique porcelain rhino in: Laying on its side with its painted-on eyes eternally open, it looks either hurt or dead. Its legs are stiff and projected towards the viewer, making it possible to see the bottom of its hooves - teardrop-shaped and with a circular hole in their center. The magical beast with eyes for paws has been slayed, and its story must be told. I tell this story through painting because painting is how i speak, and because every painting is a spell, I get to make four wishes - one for each eye-hoof. After the piece is finished, I conclude that the area around the frontal eye-hoof is my favourite part of the painting, its shapes and colors especially interesting. I paint the rhino again three more times, zooming-in on this detail, trying to figure out what about it is so alluring. Does this mean I get to make seven wishes? With each close-up, the word NOW seems louder. The eye looks back at me with ever-increasing interest.
